Just What Do Elders Do?

"The Session" is the collective name for the group of Elders that run the church. Session members are known as "Ruling Elder" during their term on Session, and just "elder" when the term has expired.
You’ve seen them greeting people following Sunday worship. You’ve seen them serving Communion. From time to time, you’ve seen one in the pulpit reading scripture.  This is the tip of the iceberg.  For an in-depth view, you may refer to Chapter X of the Presbyterian Church USA Book of Order (there’s a copy in the Church Office).
Elders meet on the second Thursday of each month to conduct church business, and that’s a lot.  Current church membership is reported.  Attendance at the Sunday Morning Worship service is reported.  Information about upcoming meetings or events to be held in the church is announced.  A representative (or two, if needed) to the Presbytery meeting is appointed.  The church calendar of events is approved.  Approval for any church sponsored activity (i.e., Halloween Party or non-church activity [i.e., Rumsey Island Homeowners' Association meeting]) is considered.  Work of the deacons and the trustees is reviewed.  Baptisms, membership transfers and weddings must be approved.  Monthly financial reports are distributed and reviewed.  Special committees are appointed as needed and their reports are given serious consideration.  Most recently, the Vision Committee’s report generated a lot of excitement as plans were discussed to implement the committee’s findings and recommendations.
Each elder serves on one or more of the following teams:

Each committee meets monthly and is currently considering how issues raised in the Church Study Report can be addressed.  This should give you some ideas as to just what elders do.
